Does a loft conversion require planning permission?

Yes, the loft conversion requires planning permission as it creates a new residential unit.
In principle, planning permission is required if the conversion measures change the floor area, i.e. the construction of dormers and changes to the roof pitch must be approved by the responsible building authority.

When can an attic be converted?

An attic is considered a fully-fledged living space if half or more of the living space has a height of at least 2.30 meters.
The statics must also be checked, as the load-bearing capacity of the loft must be sufficient.

How long does an attic conversion take?

The duration of an attic conversion depends on the dimensions and architecture. A loft conversion of up to 50m² takes around 2 to 6 weeks.

How much does an attic conversion cost?

The costs for converting the attic are very individual, depending on the type of use and architecture, and start at around 70,000 euros.
